Baier began his television career at a small station in Rockford, Illinois, before going on to WRAL-TV, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh. He sent an audition tape to Fox News in 1998 and was hired as the network’s Atlanta bureau head. On September 11, 2001, he drove from Georgia to Arlington, Virginia, to cover the Pentagon attack. He never returned to the Atlanta bureau and instead became the network’s Pentagon correspondent, a job he maintained for five years and during which he traveled to Afghanistan 11 times and Iraq 13 times. He was named Fox News’ White House correspondent in 2007, covering George W. Bush’s presidency. In the fall of 2007, he began filling in on Fridays for Brit Hume, then the Special Report broadcaster.
On December 23, 2008, Brit Hume anchored his final show and revealed that Baier would take over as Special Report anchor. He offered to host his first show as a permanent anchor on January 5, 2009. Open records request filed to begin investigating anti-Fox News bias in the Obama administration turned up an internal email written on October 23, 2009, by Deputy White House Communications Director Jen Psaki, in which she referred to Baier as a “lunatic” and threatened to put “some dead fish in the fox cubby.” Baier promoted his new novel To Rescue the Republic: Ulysses S. Grant, the Fragile Union, and the Crisis of 1876 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October 2021.
