When Griner first entered school, she was larger than the majority of her peers. She suffered a great loss of confidence as a result of bullying because of her boyish appearance and low voice. Griner stated to ESPN:

In class, I’ve never wanted to speak up. I detested the sound of myself, so I didn’t want to hear it. Can’t say I could hear. They made fun of my unique voice, height, and chest, among other things. I’ve had a flat chest my entire life.

On the volleyball court, Brittney vented her frustrations by spiking the ball as hard as she could. Griner, who was unwilling to give up, got into problems for yelling and fighting. Brittney admitted to regretting the times she didn’t resist in an interview with ESPN.

Griner decided to embrace her identity through clothing in the ninth grade. She revealed to Mother Jones:

“I would say the ninth grade when I first started dressing whichever I wanted to. I was so sick of dressing a certain way and living a lie. Going to high school makes you feel very much like an adult, so I wanted to be authentic.

Griner felt liberated in his boyish attire. She recalled thinking,

Man, this would’ve been so easy if I had simply done it sooner.” With her parents, Brittany’s wardrobe choices led to some humorous misunderstandings. She clarified:

When my mom washed my clothes, my dad asked, “Whose boxers are these? ” And I proclaimed, “They’re mine” [slowly raises hand]. I’ve always taken risks and been completely out there.

Griner’s father expressed anger when Brittany revealed that she was gay. Coming out to her parents was the next stage in Brittany’s embrace of her individuality.

Ray argued, “I ain’t rearing no queer girl.” He prohibited the high school student from asking buddies around to hang out at home.

Griner and her father often quarreled because Griner had inherited Ray’s stubbornness. Ray was annoyed by Griner’s sexuality because they argued over insignificant issues.

Griner eventually moved out of the home to live with the junior varsity basketball coach at Nimitz. She was supported by her mother and siblings, who had come to terms with her sexuality. Ray changed his mind after realizing that her sexuality didn’t affect how good she was at basketball. She uttered:

It required a process. I believe a portion of the improvement can be attributed to my great performance with the ball according to Ray, Britney wants people to embrace her for who she is. “Now I get that,”
