When Community first premiered, the show’s stars were Yvette Nicole Brown and Joel McHale. Shirley Bennett, who went through an intriguing character arc, was played by her.

Shirley or Brown’s well-known weight loss was one of the first things people noticed about her. Even though the show ended in 2015 and Brown has since worked on several projects, fans are still curious about Brown’s transformation.

What caused her to lose weight?

When she was diagnosed in 2013, she was still enrolled in the Community. But she was no stranger to the disease. She had been prediabetic for ten years and knew others who were. But she had no idea how bad things would get. In 2016, she told Parade that she had been prediabetic for about ten years and had assumed she would never develop true diabetes.

She had a startling realization. Brown realized she needed to alter her lifestyle in order to manage her Type 2 diabetes. The actress then dealt with the situation in the only way she knew how: by making jokes about it.

“In everything in life, you can choose to travel down the dark road or the light road, and I chose the light way,” she explained.

She had a strong support network. She chose to conceal her illness from her Community castmates for a few months, but they were supportive nonetheless. Her dentist also assisted her in finding humor in her daily battles with the illness. They had a good time together, she said several times during the interview.

She was able to get her health back on track after receiving the diagnosis. She also took better care of her teeth, drank enough water, exercised, and ate healthier foods. All of these lifestyle changes caused her to lose weight and appear smaller.

She mocked her diagnosis and weight loss in 2014, saying, “When they tell you they’re going to take your feet out, you stop eating doughnuts.” She looked fantastic while also feeling fantastic. And portion control was key to her success. Except for one instance, she has never been the type to be concerned with numbers.

Concerning Weight Loss

Brown was unconcerned about her figures, despite the fact that she had a figure to show for her drastic weight loss. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, she said of her concern about her weight and clothing size, “That’s definitely vanity driven.” Do you realize how small your waist is? What is the size of your butt?

She was more concerned with her blood glucose level, which was a more significant figure. “I’m just trying to shed diabetes,” Brown said, explaining that she was never the Halle Berry type and never wanted to be. Brown never felt self-conscious about her weight or disliked the label “chubby.” Instead, she realized that her only goal was to be healthy, and she wanted everyone to know it.

She appears to be in great shape, and her diabetes appears to be improving.
