On January 11, 1993, Bill gave birth to Caleb, his third son, and the first child with Jennifer Butler, his second wife.
His Catholic, Irish-born paternal grandparents were Lucille Mary (Collins) and Edward Joseph Murray II. In films like Caddyshack and Ghostbusters, among others, his uncle, actor Brian Doyle-Murray, who is also Bill’s brother, costarred with him.

During the Black Lives Matter protest, Caleb Murray was detained
The Ghostbusters actor’s second wife and his eldest son had a legal run-in during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Massachusetts back in June 2020. At the time, he was peacefully attending a rally in Vineyard Haven while living in Chilmark, Massachusetts.
During the civil upheaval on Martha’s Vineyard, the police detained Caleb for “spitting on and biting police officer and threatening arson.” The authorities added that he hurled a rock out of a car window at the 66-year-old man’s automobile, Eric Woods. Wood attacked a black teen after earlier using a racial epithet.
The demonstrators couldn’t help but raise a commotion after his insulting remarks. Caleb is thought to have become the protest’s main target during this time.
Following his detention, Caleb allegedly “attacked sheriff’s officers, threatened arson, spit on and bit a police officer.” Later, the court dismissed the accusation of destroying the car’s property.
Murray was still facing three counts of violence and assault on a police officer, though. At the demonstration in Martha’s Vineyard, he had gotten into a fight with police officers who were attending to another issue.
According to police records at the time, Murray became uncooperative following his arrest, biting and spitting on a police officer in the car, and later injured himself and deputies with a piece of his cell’s furniture. Caleb allegedly vowed to set buildings on fire after he was released from prison.
Caleb was charged with numerous offenses
The police initially accused Jennifer’s oldest son of six crimes. They included making terroristic threats, threatening to commit a crime, three charges of assault and battery on a police officer, and maliciously destroying property.
Though not before his arraignment, the police ultimately dismissed the allegations of making terrorist threats and maliciously destroying property. As there was probable cause that Caleb was not the one who broke Wood’s window, Edgartown District Court Clerk-Magistrate Liza Williamson dismissed the allegation of property destruction.
According to Williamson, the truck’s glass was already damaged and it was inside the demonstrators’ encirclement. Murray was already bowed down, so he couldn’t commit vandalism or purposeful destruction, she continued.
Ultimately, the Edgartown District Court merely imposed one-year pretrial probation on Caleb. However, this came after his $10,000 pre-arraignment bail was paid.
