Calvin Ford is the boxing trainer for WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis. He was apprehended shortly before New Year’s Eve 2024.
Kenny Ellis, Ford’s business colleague, said in an interview that he was jailed in Baltimore on assault charges. He did, however, explain that Calvin had committed no wrongdoing. Is Ford still in jail? Calvin, who has a history of criminal accusations (drug trafficking), spent ten years in prison in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, since his release from prison, he has come clean about his past and is now employed as a boxing instructor at the Herring Run Recreational Center.
His life story and demeanor informed the character Dennis “Cutty” Wise in HBO’s ‘The Wire.’ Ford, on the other hand, is best recognized as the coach of American boxer Gervonta Davis. He kept Davis away from negative influences and assisted him in becoming a boxing champion, defeating opponents like Ryan Garcia, Isaac Cruz, and Mario Barrios.

Calvin Ford was arrested in late December 2023 in Baltimore on accusations of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon. According to sources, the warrant was issued in Las Vegas, but Gervonta was apprehended in his hometown. He was later sent to Las Vegas to face the purported allegations.
He risks two to twenty years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. There is no information available about Ford’s bail or judicial proceedings. Davis’ buddy and co-trainer, Kenny Ellis, stated on January 1, 2024, that “he’s been falsely accused” in an interview with Fannon International Boxing Channel.
In a 15-minute video, Ellis denies any wrongdoing and claims to have been with Ford the entire time. Furthermore, if the allegations were true, why wasn’t he jailed with him? He later stated that the truth would be disclosed soon. Calvin Ford was arrested just days after Gervonta, alias Tank, converted to Islam and took the Muslim name “Abdul Wahid” on December 24, 2023.
Gervonta Davis was released from the Baltimore Correctional Institution on July 14, 2023, after serving 44 days. He admitted to running a red light and crashing with a vehicle, hurting four persons, including a pregnant woman.
Ford Was Imprisoned for Ten Years for Drug Offenses
Calvin Ford was 21 when he was sentenced to ten years in jail for cocaine trafficking in 1988. He worked as a lieutenant for a cocaine trafficking organization in Baltimore, where he managed operations directed by Warren Boardley and Christopher Burrows. He met Reggie Gross, a former heavyweight boxer who fought Mike Tyson, and Frank Bruno, who was condemned to life in prison in 1989 for three murders.
At the suggestion of Gross, Ford chose to pursue his boxing passion as a professional vocation. He was 31 when he was released and decided to become a boxing instructor instead. However, he had several obstacles while working as a dishwasher and later as manager at the seafood restaurant Phillips Foods. Thanks to the support of his friend Ellis, he eventually became a boxing instructor at the Herring Run Recreational Center.
Calvin Ford’s Son Death
On July 21, 2013, Quaadir Gurley, Ford’s son, was shot and died in the Donnelly Homes housing complex in North Trenton. He was the father of six children at the time of his death. He grew up in Baltimore before moving to New Jersey with his mother. Quaadir then asked his father [Calvin] to keep an eye on Gervonta Davis.
“I need you to stay with Shorty [Davis] because you’ll be a good role model for him.”
Calvin’s friendship with the future boxing champion was perhaps aided by the fact that he had known Gervonta since he was seven years old. It was the same thing for the boxer, who looked up to him as a father figure. Gervonta Davis was raised by his grandmother while his mother struggled with drug addiction and his father was incarcerated. So he would stay and practice with Ford, who would guide him and keep him out of trouble. He claims that
“Calvin was always making sure that I was on the track and whoever went against me, Calvin was standing beside me.”
