On August 18, 2022, Shields sought to defend Tate in a series of tweets and made comparisons to the rapper in the process. This started the online war.
He remarked that although young ladies admiring Cardi B and the Kardashians was acceptable, young guys looking up to Tate was not something he could fathom offending people over.

Tate shouldn’t be as much of a problem as people are making him out to be, he suggested as he concluded his Twitter tirade.

Shields’ comments eventually reached the ‘WAP’ rapper’s notice after going viral. The Neighborhood Talk was able to capture and repost her response to the MMA fighter’s insulting remarks in a now-deleted tweet. She did not take the fighter’s remarks lightly.

Tate received criticism in 2017 after tweeting that women should be held accountable for sexual harassment.
In the midst of the numerous claims against Harvey Weinstein, the contentious star began tweeting about sexual harassment.
He admitted that sexual harassment was abhorrent and unforgivable but made it clear that it wasn’t when a man was staring at a lady or whistling and asking her name.
The public was then outraged by his subsequent tweets. He claimed that since women have traditionally engaged in sex exchanges for opportunities, some of Weinstein’s accusers may not have actually experienced abuse.
He went on, “The second point is that you must accept responsibility if you put yourself in a situation to be sexually assaulted. I do not condone the fact that you were raped.”

Many supported the Grammy-winning musician and blasted the fighter for standing up for Tate.
