Irving and Bessie Reiner, watchmakers, gave birth to Carl Reiner. His parents were Polish Jews who immigrated to Israel. His mother was born in Romania, while his father was born in Austria. His older sibling, Charlie, died in WWII and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
When Charlie was 16 years old, he read in the New York Daily News about a free theatrical workshop offered by the WPA. Then he told Carl. The first comic in the family was Harry Mathias, who was his uncle. He had previously been a machinist who fixed sewing machines.

Reiner played the title role in Call Me Mister among other Broadway musicals. In 1960, Reiner and Brooks made an appearance on the comedy program The Steve Allen Show. In the movie “Year Old Man” from 2000, Reiner portrayed a straight man.
