Carl Torbush died, according to the ETSU sports department, but the exact cause of death has not been disclosed. He passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2023, at the age of 72.

Carl Torbush was a former American football coach with a long and successful coaching career. He began coaching in high school before continuing to college. Throughout his career, he has coached at Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, and Carson-Newman.

He also was the head football coach at Louisiana Tech University in 1987, the University of North Carolina from 1997 to 2000, and East Tennessee State University from 2013 to 2017. Overall, he has a 31-48 head coaching record and 42 years of experience coaching college football.

Carl Torbush’s Cause of Death and Obituary

Carl Torbush, an East Spencer native, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday night, November 6, 2023. The ETSU sports department made an official notice about his passing. Torbush was diagnosed with ALS last week, but the specific cause of death was not disclosed. He had previously battled cancer. Carl Torbush was diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancer in 2010 while serving as Kansas’ defensive coordinator and underwent surgery to treat it.

He made a full recovery and resumed coaching before retiring in December 2017. Carl Torbush’s wife, Janet, and son, Trey Torbush. Trey Torbush is the son of the late Carl Torbush and his wife Janet. Trey Torbush (born February 26, 1990) attended American Christian Academy before going on to Carson-Newman to play football for the Eagles.

Football Community Responds to His Loss

ETSU President Brian Norland stated that the late coach would be remembered for his vision and ethics. Norland praised Torbush’s leadership and assistance as the school’s football team revived after a decade-long hiatus. Mack Brown of UNC expressed his thoughts on Torbush in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“We lost a great guy too soon. Coach Torbush had a tremendous positive influence on many people’s lives. He adored the game of football, especially defense. Brown also noted Torbush’s role as the architect of one of college football’s top defenses in 1996 and 1997 at Carolina. Carolina Football also weighed in, writing on X to express their condolences to Coach Torbush’s family at this terrible time.
