Junhwan Cha began training for professional ice skating when he was quite young. He began skating when he was seven years old, while on a school trip. Hea-Sook, his coach at the moment, was guiding him. His skating idols are Evgeni Plushenko and Daisuke Takahashi. Hwan was a junior skater who won the title while finishing fourth in the 2011 South Korean Championship. Not only that, but he was the winner of the South Korean Championship in 2012, which he achieved at a young age. Junhwan Cha won a gold medal in the Asian Trophy in 2012-13, repeating his title as a junior champion at the South Korean Championships.

He competed in the 2014 Korean Championships and won the title by finishing the fifth while in his senior levels. This was his first experience with a game during his senior season at the national championships. Hwan began the season by practicing for the Olympic qualification event for the 2021 Asian Open Games in Beijing. He came in sixth place in the competition. Hwan also showed interest in the Tallinn Four Continents Championship in 2022. Later, he became the first South Korean to win the Four Continents medal. Junhwan Cha competed in the men’s event at the 2022 Winter Olympics. He skated a flawless short program and finished fourth in the segment with a top score of 99.51.
