Her niece confirmed the singer’s death at the age of 66. The cause of death, however, has not been made public.Wright “influenced a generation of female singer-songwriters and continues to influence the world of hip hop,” according to her official profile on the Universal Music website.

Mrs. B Records was Wright’s record label, and Miami Spice was her publishing company. Her death comes just a week after singer Chaka Khan asked fans to pray for the health of the Florida legend. On Twitter, Khan stated,”Calling all my #PrayWarriors | My beloved sister, Betty Wright @MsBettyWright, is in desperate need of your prayers right now.”

“Whatever Will Be, Will Be,” as the saying goes.We pray for Sister Betty in Jesus’ name. Chaka, I love you.” In a People Magazine feature on Wright’s music in March 2020, Chaka Khan was referred to as Wright’s “dear friend.”

In 1985, Betty married King Sporty. Chaka Azuri, Asha Wright, Patrice Parker, Patrick Parker, and Aisha McCray are their five children. Unfortunately, Wright’s family was struck by tragedy on Christmas Day 2005, when her son Patrick Parker was shot dead at a holiday party in South Florida’s Opa-Laka community. Wright also recorded “Dry Well” in memory of her son. Wright performed the song at a rally in 2012 in support of George Zimmerman’s arrest. She stated at the time, according to Reuters,

“And if I can lend a celebrity voice to it, because when my son died, the power of family and the power of prayer got me through it.” And I started writing it down, as I always do with my pain.” Furthermore, in a 1986 interview with the Sun-Sentinel, Wright stated that she once turned down a $1 million offer to perform in South Africa.
