How did Chaka Khan start her Professional Career?

Rufus (her band) released their debut album in 1973, but it didn’t receive much attention until Stevie Wonder and the group worked on the song “Tell Me Something Good,” which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and won them their first Grammy Award.

Following the release of their second album, which went platinum, Rufus went on to release six platinum-selling albums throughout the remaining 1970s.

Additionally, they attracted a lot of interest for their live performances, largely because of Chaka Khan. But when conflict within the band grew in the late 1970s, she ultimately agreed to a solo deal with Warner Bros.

When she was working on her solo first album, Rufus made albums without her, but they again worked on “Masterjam.” She continued to release solo material during the early 1980s after her platinum-selling debut album, “Myself,” and released her follow-up, “Naughty.”

“Seal In Red,” the last studio album by Rufus, was released in 1983. Khan didn’t appear on the album, but she did return for the band’s final charting single, “Ain’t Nobody,” which peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 100. The band formally broke up after this album was released.

In 1984, Chaka released “I Feel For You,” another hit album that went platinum and featured several hits that reached the top of the charts. She soon started working with well-known musicians like Ray Charles and Steve Winwood, and she continued to release music throughout the 1990s, but less frequently.

Chaka Khan left Warner Bros. in 1996 after the release of “Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol.,” claiming that the record company had neglected her, and signed with NPG Records. She worked on several singles and made a comeback with the album “Funk This,” which included Mary J. Blige.

In 2008, Chaka argued that the music industry’s transformation was advantageous for musicians since it gave them more freedom to express themselves creatively.

She continued to contribute vocals and work with other musicians during the ensuing years, and in 2011 she was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In her hometown of Chicago, Chaka Khan Day was established in 2013, and two years later, she participated in the 21st season of “Dancing with the Stars,” where she was the first contestant to go home. She made headlines in 2016 when she announced that she would postpone shows to check into rehab, but she has lately started working on a new album, her first in more than ten years.
