LBC reporter Charlotte Lynch was on a motorway overpass above the M25 in Hertfordshire, England, on Tuesday. She was there for about 45 minutes, covering a demonstration called Just Stop Oil. When two cops approached her, she handed them her press card and said that she was only doing her job.

Officers, on the other hand, detained her, confiscated her phone, and arrested her for causing a public disturbance. Ms. Lynch called the interaction “absolutely terrifying,” adding that it was “blindingly obvious” that she was carrying out her responsibilities. After five hours, she was released with no action or accusations taken against her.

It was not an isolated incident. Earlier that day, photographer Tom Bowles and filmmaker Rich Felgate claimed they were arrested by police for 13 hours for filming the protest. Despite having their press cards with them, the two were handcuffed, their equipment was confiscated, and they were taken to the Police Station.

Chief Constable Charlie Hall of Hertfordshire responded to charges that he had shut down the free press by stating that processes were in place to examine their reaction to the protests. They also stated that additional measures are being made to ensure that respected media sites can continue to function. The effectiveness of such measures has yet to be determined. Furthermore, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman stated that the prime minister believes it is “vital journalists can do their job.”
