Nimitz was the foremost submarine expert in the United States Navy. He was trained in submarines and later oversaw the conversion of these vessels’ propulsion systems from gasoline to diesel. He was also instrumental in obtaining approval to build the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, whose propulsion system eventually completely replaced diesel-powered submarines in the US. Nimitz was the chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Navigation from 1939 to 1945, and from 1945 to 1947, he was the Chief of Naval Operations. He was the last living fleet admiral in the United States Navy. The USS Nimitz supercarrier, the class’s lead ship, bears his name.
