Chris Bailey, the Australian singer and lyricist for the venerable punk band The Saints, passed away at the age of 65. The singer was no longer living and passed away on April 9, 2022, the band said in a statement.

The band’s longest-serving member, Bailey also released a number of solo albums. The cause of the singer’s passing has not yet been disclosed. ARIA, the Australian Recording Industry Association, also confirmed Bailey’s passing:

“Chris Bailey, the band’s pioneering frontman from Brisbane, The Saints, has passed away… Our thoughts are with Chris’ family, friends, and supporters.

Following the late singer’s passing, musicians and fans paid their tributes on social media. Bailey’s fans praised him and his work, calling him a legend and a punk rock titan, while others praised him as an inspiration for upcoming musicians. Notably, Ed Kuepper of The Saints revealed in a tweet that he first met Bailey in jail when they were both 14 years old.

Bailey was born in 1957 to Irish parents in Kenya. Before relocating to Australia, he spent the first seven years of his life in Belfast. He first met drummer Ivor Hay and guitarist Ed Kuepper in Brisbane, Australia, when they were both still in high school.

The group came together to become Kid Galahad and the Eternals in 1973. In 1974, they changed the band’s name to The Saints, and they went on to influence Australian punk music. The band’s debut single, the iconic punk anthem I’m Stranded, was followed in 1977 by the release of their debut album of the same name.
