The play was written by Chris Bush and premiered at Sheffield’s Crucible in 2019 before transferring to the National Theatre in February.
The author of Standing at the Sky’s Edge from Sheffield exclaimed that she is “over the moon” when it won the Olivier Award for a best new musical on Sunday.
It recounts the 60-year lives of three families residing in the Park Hill council housing.
The music was composed by Richard Hawley, a singer-songwriter from Sheffield.
Chris Bush expressed to BBC Radio Sheffield the significance of the honor.
“We are ecstatic, it was a wonderful evening, and I believe we are all pleased.”
The production at London’s National Theatre finished last week, and the author was pleased that it had enchanted the capital’s spectators.
“We are extremely appreciative that audiences in the south have responded in the same manner.
“It works in Sheffield because Park Hill is on your doorstep if you take down the [theatre] barriers, but what I appreciate about this award show is that it has a true universal story at its core.”
She expressed optimism that the musical would return to the stage and noted that other projects were in the works.
She remarked,
“I don’t believe it’s a secret that we’re developing a TV program based on the show.”
Ms. Bush remarked that the program did “wonders” for her reputation as a writer.
It has penetrated in a manner that television shows don’t always.
The program is named after Richard Hawley’s 2012 album, and the plot is adapted to his music.
Together with musical director Tom Deering, Mr. Hawley also won an Olivier for the best original score or orchestration for the show.
Ms. Bush stated that she hoped the musical’s popularity would demonstrate the significance of sharing tales about “regular people” who matter.
“These personalities could be described as very ordinary or as individuals who are not necessarily found in history books.
“Even the smallest lives have majesty, poetry, and tragedy; they are all worthy of being told.”
