Chris Rock’s Remark About Nicole Brown Simpson Was Harmful

Chris Rock

Five months after his infamous physical altercation with Will Smith, American comedian Chris Rock faced intense social media backlash for making a controversial statement about Nicole Brown Simpson while explaining why he would not be hosting the Academy Awards the following year.

The 57-year-old performer compared hosting the 2023 Oscars to going back to prison during a performance on August 28 in Phoenix, Arizona. Nicole Brown Simpson, Simpson’s late wife, returned to the Italian restaurant where she was murdered.

According to the Arizona Republic, the comedian “profanely” denied a Super Bowl advertisement. When word of the comedian’s ostensible joke spread, several social media users chastised him for his inappropriate remark.

Nicole Brown Simpson was Simpson’s second wife

Nicole Brown Simpson was born in Germany on May 19, 1959, to a German mother and an American father. Her family moved to California after she was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Nicole began working as a waitress at The Daisy in Beverly Hills when she was 18 years old.

She met O.J. Simpson, a former NFL great who would become her husband. They began dating soon after and quickly fell in love. O.J. Simpson married Nicole Brown Simpson in 1985 after his first marriage to Marguerite Whitley ended in divorce in 1979. Their two children are a girl named Sydney and a boy named Justin.

Their love was short-lived, and she filed for divorce due to “irreconcilable differences.” Many rumors claim that OJ used to hit Nicole, and their friends used to help the couple patch things up. Nicole ate dinner with her family and friends at Mezzaluna restaurant on June 12, 1994, following her daughter’s dance performance. Her mother’s sunglasses had been left at Nicole’s, but her waiter friend Ronald Goldman had promised to deliver them.

On June 13, the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were discovered in the former’s Los Angeles home. Brown was stabbed seven times in the scalp, neck, and throat, nearly decapitating her, according to an autopsy report. When law enforcement arrived at O.J.’s house to inform him, they discovered a bloodied glove and a white Ford Bronco with blood on it.

They later discovered another glove linked to the double crime on his property. OJ had gone to Chicago and was no longer at home. The police told the ex-NFL player to turn himself in on June 17, but he fled in a different White Bronco. O.J. surrendered after a brief police encounter and a low-speed chase. When he was apprehended, he had a revolver, $9,000 in cash, a passport, and a fake mustache.

The murder trial of O.J. Simpson’s defense by Robert Shapiro, Johnnie Cochran, and Kim Kardashian’s late father, Robert Kardashian, established him as one of the country’s most well-known events. O.J. Simpson was found not guilty in October 1995 after an eight-month contentious trial. In 1997, a judge awarded $33.5 million in compensatory damages to the families of Brown and Goldman, and O.J. was found “responsible” for the murders.
