Christi Paul, co-host of CNN’s New Day Weekend, announced her retirement from the network on Sunday, June 26th, following the merger of Warner Media and Discovery, CNN’s parent company. Paul has been employed by CNN and HLN for more than two decades.
Paul said on her final CNN broadcast that she would be returning to Ohio to work for a local station. The anchor is originally from Bellevue, Ohio, which explains why she chose to relocate there.
According to sources, Paul’s participation in the Sunday version of the program will be her last. Number claims that a variety of anchors will alternate with Boris Sanchez in hosting the program.
The motives for Christi Paul’s departure from CNN
On Sunday’s program, Christi Paul explained her departure to the public and co-hosted with Boris Sanchez. The 53-year-old newscaster answered with an impassioned statement:
“I am a member of the Great Resignation.”
Following her announcement, CNN’s media correspondent in charge, Brian Stelter, tweeted the news.
In the meantime, CNN senior producer and award-winning journalist Bethany Crudele took to Twitter to express her sadness over Paul’s departure. Crudele mentioned in her tweet:
Today is a bittersweet morning on New Day since it is @Christi Paul’s last day on the program.
Christi Paul stated that she had planned to leave this year as early as January. The co-host also stated that her early morning CNN program interfered with her family time. She went on to say:
“My husband and I exchanged glances and said, ‘We need to return home…'” I was sick and tired of being exhausted.”
Christi Paul informed her former co-host Boris Sanchez that she would be seeking employment with a small Ohio news station. However, neither CNN nor Paul disclosed the station’s identity.
According to AdWeek, the Ohio native will announce the details of her new employment within the next week.
Christi Paul’s legacy
After serving as a reporter for WDTV and KTVB, the co-anchor joined Warner Media’s network in 2003 and hosted shows on CNN and HLN for many years. Later, the graduate of broadcast journalism worked as Robin Meade’s Morning Express backup anchor.
During her tenure at CNN, Paul co-hosted the news show New Day Weekend for over nine years. Following the announcement of her departure from the network, the reason for the anchor’s departure is evident.
According to Paul, the 53-year-old co-host desires to spend more time in Ohio with her family, which includes her three children, husband Peter Paul, and others.
