On October 17, 2014, the loss of his younger son Arthur rocked the family. He was hurt badly in an accident. He was only 13 years old when he was killed in Cameroon by a car. It is impossible to describe the agony of a mother who has lost her kid. Since the day Arthur passed away, Christine has been dealing with his loss, which has been tough for her to accept and is still having an impact on her. It was challenging for the entire family.
Joel thought about giving up basketball after his younger brother’s passing hurt him. He hadn’t seen his younger brother in four years and was now living in America.

How Joel became a star in the NBA
Although Joel was born in Cameroon, a country with little exposure to and media coverage of basketball, he was originally an excellent volleyball player and dreamed to play in Europe.
He didn’t start playing basketball until he was inspired by Kobe Bryant during the NBA Finals matchup between the Celtics. Joel’s volleyball coach urged him to sign up for a camp sponsored by NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute, but Joel lacked the bravery to do so because he was not familiar with basketball rules.
He stood out and was ultimately requested to take part in Basketball Without Borders (BWB). He was eventually convinced and given permission to enroll at Montverde Academy in Florida, despite his father’s initial desire for him to pursue a volleyball career in Europe. His talent significantly improved with continued practice, and the rest is history.
Joel is in a committed relationship with model Anne De Paula, whom he met through a mutual acquaintance at a dinner in New York City in 2018. They got together as friends first. The shared interests of Joel and his fiancée kept them together. Every day they had to struggle with time, and their relationship eventually developed into love.
