James R. McDonald, an educator and high school principal, and Patricia McDonald, a nursing professor and real estate agent, raised McDonald’s in New York City. Christopher McDonald is of Irish descent and a devoted Catholic; he and his siblings were raised in Romulus, New York.

Christopher McDonald left Romulus Central School in 1973 after receiving his diploma and enrolled at Hobart College in Geneva, New York, where he played football and soccer. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society as well. His younger brother Daniel McDonald passed away from brain cancer in February 2007. He is a friend of Jim Kelly, a former Buffalo Bills quarterback, and a fan of the team.
