The Radical Dreamers Edition, with a few small updates like better visuals, a speed-up/slow-down feature, and the addition of Radical Dreamers. The game is still basically the same as it was in 1999 despite these changes.

The role-playing video game Chrono Cross was created and released by Square in 1999 for the PlayStation system. The game is set in the same universe as Chrono Trigger, a 1995 Super Nintendo Entertainment System game.

With assistance from several designers who worked on Chrono Trigger, such as graphic director Yasuyuki Honne and composer Yasunori Mitsuda, the game was principally created by scenarist and director Masato Kato. Nobuteru Yki developed the character designs.

The parallel worlds theory and a teenage teenager named Serge are central to the game’s plot. Serge seeks to learn the reason for the difference between the two universes after learning about an alternate reality in which he died as a youngster.

In search of information and the enigmatic Frozen Flame, Serge journeys through the tropical archipelago of El Nido with the thief Kid and various other characters, while being chased by the enigmatic antagonist Lynx.

Chrono Cross received a perfect rating of 10.0 from GameSpot when it was released in Japan in 1999 and North America in 2000. in By 2003, the game had sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, and the Greatest Hits re-release and subsequent popularity of the Ultimate Hits series in Japan were both a result.

In July 2011 in Japan, the game was re-published for the PlayStation Network. Four months later, it was released in North America. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, a remastered version of the game, was released in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One.

Chrono Cross has a few distinct characteristics in addition to the typical role-playing video game action. Serge, the main character, is controlled by the player as he largely travels on foot or by boat through the game’s setting. An overworld map that offers an aerial view of the environment and is reminiscent of Chrono Trigger makes it easier to move between locations.

The game includes a range of three-dimensionally rendered settings, including villages, outdoor spaces, and dungeons.

Field maps with more accurate scales depict cities and woodlands, allowing players to interact with locals to make purchases, get help with riddles, or engage in combat. Players can see foes on the field maps or be ambushed in Chrono Cross, unlike Chrono Trigger where encounters are random.

The perspective shifts to a fight screen when players come into touch with foes, where they can utilize physical assaults, “Elements,” to protect themselves, or flee.

The player has an infinite amount of time to choose an action from the menu as battles are conducted in turns. Both player characters and computer-controlled adversaries have their hit points decreased by each strike; however, some elements can restore them.

A playable character will faint if they run out of hit points. Except for some storyline-related engagements that permit defeat, if all of the player’s characters are defeated in combat, the game ends and the player must restart from a previously saved chapter.

Chrono Cross’ creators sought to reinvent the genre’s gameplay dynamics, leading to several ground-breaking elements. For instance, players have the choice to leave any combat, including boss battles and decisive battle.
