When word of architect Claude Cormier’s death leaked online, people were concerned about the contents of his obituary. Claude Cormier RCA was a landscape architect from Quebec. His principal projects are based in Montreal and Toronto.
His landscaping business was established in 1994. Due to new partners, the company Claude Cormier + Associates changed its name to CCxA in March 2022. Claude Cormier founded CCxA in Montreal in 1995 after studying design history and theory at Harvard University, landscape architecture at the University of Toronto, and agronomy at the University of Guelph.

Valérie Plante (now X) just tweeted about Claude’s death. Claude Cormier’s family has not yet revealed the cause of death. Although the exact cause of his death is unknown, he probably died as a result of a sickness or an accident. The passing of Claude Cormier is a great shock and a great loss. Claude was a remarkable Montrealer, dreamer, and builder.
Many local landmarks and public spaces bear his imprint, including the Ring, Village Boules, Dorchester Square, and Clock Beach, among others. His contributions to architecture will be recognized for the rest of time. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and everyone else who is mourning him today.
Have a good night, Claude, and thank you very much. In 2010, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design sponsored an exclusive retrospective exhibition of “Erratics” by the firm. Cormier was knighted to the Ordre National du Québec in 2009, the province’s highest honor bestowed on persons who have substantially contributed to Quebec’s development and leadership.
Cormier was also awarded an Emerging Voice for North America by the Architectural League of New York, and Fast Company Magazine named him one of 14 global designers driving the design industry.
The Family Mourns Claude’s Death
Last year, Phaidon Press invited the studio to be included in a booklet as one of the top 30 global landscape architects. The first book dedicated solely to Claude Cormier’s paintings, “Serious Fun, The Landscapes of Claude Cormier,” will be released by Oro Publications in the autumn of 2021.
May Claude’s soul rest in peace, and may our memories of his majesty console us. In this time of loss, let us come together as a community to assist one another in development. Claude’s tragic death has devastated his family. Their emotions are bursting at the seams as they deal with the agony of bidding goodbye to their beloved Claude.
