On September 2, 2022, as she was jogging close to the University of Memphis, she was abducted at 4 a.m. Later, on September 5, 2022, the remnants of her body were discovered 7 miles from the location of her kidnapping by Cleotha Abston.
When the authorities started looking into the case, they discovered that Cleotha Abston’s DNA matched a sample that had been discovered nearby a pair of Eliza Fletcher Sandals. During an inquiry, officers found Eliza’s sandals. Police found these sandals in the area where Eliza was last observed by the witness and on CCTV.
After discovering that the SUV used in the kidnapping belonged to a resident of the area where Abston lived, police also managed to apprehend Cleotha. Police observed that SUV vehicle on CCTV footage. One witness attested to having before seeing Abston cleaning the interior of the automobile.

Early Cleotha’s life was spent engaging in criminal activity. He started committing crimes when he was younger and in his teenage years. Even worse, he left school in the ninth grade and never returned to finish his studies. There is no proof that he ever went to high school. He continued to be well-known as “Pookie” while still a teenager.
When he was 14, he was accused of rape and criminal activity in a juvenile court. Authorities have confirmed with news outlets that he attempted to rape a girl when he was 14 years old.
At the age of 16, he kidnapped Memphis attorney Kemper Duran while holding him at gunpoint. The lawyer was forced to use an ATM nearby after being thrown inside the car trunk. Later, he was adjudged guilty by the court in Kemper Duran’s kidnapping case. Cleotha Abston was then given a sentence of 24 years in prison.
He frequently appeared in child court for various criminal cases from 1995 to 2001. He was spared punishment, however, because of his advanced age, and the court gave him time to reflect on his actions and make amends. But in 2001, after reaching adulthood, he was finally imprisoned.
After he abducted and killed Eliza Fletcher, Cleotha Abston was hidden in his brother Mario Abston’s house. Police also detained his brother, who is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail in Memphis on unrelated charges.
Mario acknowledged in his statement that he won’t be aware of his brother’s actions and that he was also wondering why his brother was behaving strangely toward him. When police went inside Mario Abston’s home, they discovered Cleotha washing his clothes in the house’s sink.

Cleotha Abston spent his 20 years of life in jail after he got arrested at his 18th year of age. He raped women previously before his enticement to jail. Also, Cleotha Abston came out of Jail he began working as a car cleaner in a nearby car cleaning service. After his arrest, his employer confirmed to the police that Cleotha works for him. The employer also shared that he drives the SUV car that was used in the kidnapping and was later spotted on CCTV cameras.
And now Cleotha will again spend his next years in jail. He will be presented in front of a judge on 7th September 2022 under the charges of identity theft, abduction, murder, theft of property, and fraudulent use of a credit card. Additional charges of first-degree murder and first-degree murder in perpetration of kidnapping are also issued against Cleotha.
After his arrest, Cleotha rejected to cooperate with the Investigation team. A CCTV video taken under the custody of the Memphis police states that Eliza Flecther got targeted by a man in SUV. This man waited for her a few times and then when she reached near to her the man forced her inside his car and droved away from the kidnapping spot.
After a smart investigation police found that Celotha Abston was the man driving the SUV. Police got clear that the suspect is Cleotha. As per the arrest affidavit of Cleotha, he and Eliza Fletcher doesn’t have any previous acquaintance but even though Cleotha killed her.
