Clinton started playing football while still a college student. He played football for the University of Miami’s Miami Hurricanes. He is just the second true freshman to start at running back since the 1975 campaign.

Portis led his team in rushing with 838 yards and eight touchdowns on 143 attempts over the course of ten games, setting a school rookie record with five 100-yard outings.

Prior to the 2004 season, the Broncos dealt Portis to the Redskins for cornerback champion Bailey and a second-round pick in the ensuing NFL Draft. Portis inked an eight-year, $50.5 million deal with the Redskins.
