In 1984, he got his start opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan in Regina. He just got a few hours’ notices to put together a performance of blues standards with members of the local Regina band “Flying Colours” after the scheduled opening act failed to show up. Vaughan requested James to join him on stage for the encore and subsequently join his tour as a permanent opener. He and his band, The Hoodoo Men, toured with Vaughan in the United States, opening for him on multiple occasions. According to tradition, Vaughan offered the stage name “Colin James” since “Munn” sounded like “Mud” when announced over venue PA systems. Richard Marx’s song “Thunder and Lightning” included James on guitar.
