When Colin Powell entered the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) as a college student, he began his career as a soldier. The Army then promoted him to second lieutenant.

Following basic training, he was given a platoon leader position with the 48th Infantry in West Germany. During the Vietnam War, he worked for a year as an advisor with the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN).

He received a White House Fellowship under President Richard Nixon from 1972 to 1973 after his departure from Vietnam. In the 1980s, he worked at Fort Carson before becoming Caspar Weinberger’s senior military assistant. He was the sixteenth national security adviser for the US from 1987 until 1989. He presided over the US Army Forces Command in 1989.

From 1989 to 1993, he also served as the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His 35 years of service culminated in his 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff position, which he held from October 1989 to September 1993.
