He stated in July that he was undergoing treatment at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, where he has been a fundraising patron, for cancer in stage four.

The 54-year-old from Carmarthen stated that his primary rehabilitation objective was to lead a fundraising journey to Morocco in October.

But, he confessed that he was “some distance from that” at the moment.

In a pre-recorded video message for Channel 4’s The National Comedy Awards for Stand Up To Cancer, he described how the cancer center has been an “important part” of his life for the past decade.

“Imagine my surprise when I was diagnosed with cancer,” he said, “because I believed I had permanent immunity.”

According to him, he noticed a bump on his neck while on a fundraising trip in Cuba.

Rhod Gilbert claimed,

“I had a sore throat, I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t breathe, I was postponing and canceling tour dates, and I had awful facial spasms and a lot of muscle tension.”

“After a biopsy of this mass in my neck, it was determined that I have head and neck cancer. Carcinoma of the head appeared to be a grave condition.

“Before I knew it, I was scheduled for surgery. I underwent daily radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments.”

He hailed his treatment as “impeccable” and stated he was “coming back” to his previous self as his facial hair grew back, his voice returned to normal, and he gained weight.

Gilbert said that his rehabilitation objective was to lead the cancer center’s October fundraising hike to Mount Toubkal in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, the highest peak in North Africa.

“I’m a ways off from that at the moment, but I’m optimistic and somehow feeling pretty joyful and cheerful,” he remarked.

Due to gallstones and recurrent gallbladder infections that “kick like a donkey,” Gilbert postponed a series of live performances in December when he was informed he needed more surgery.
