Common (born Lonnie Lynn) is an American rapper, actor, and writer who rose to prominence in the 1990s with the release of his debut album, “Can I Borrow a Dollar?” in 1992. After retaining an underground following throughout the late 1990s, he acquired global acclaim through his work with the Soulquarians.

He earned his first Grammy for Best R&B Song in 2003 for Erykah Badu’s “Love of My Life,” and his second for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2007 for “Southside” (with Kanye West) from his album “Finding Forever.” “This is Me Then: The Best of Common,” released in 2007, is a compilation album that covers Common’s early rap career, from 1992 to 1997.

Lynn was born in the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood to Lonnie Lynn Jr. (father) and Mahalia Ann Hines (mother). Lonnie, his father, was an ABA basketball player who subsequently became a youth counselor, and Mahalia, his mother, was a teacher and former principal at John Hope College Preparatory High School.
