US prosecutors have dismissed domestic assault allegations against Justin Roiland, co-creator, and voice actor for the animated series Rick and Morty.
Charges against an ex-girlfriend were dismissed “due to a lack of adequate evidence beyond a reasonable doubt,” according to a spokesman for the Orange County district attorney.
Roiland tweeted “justice” and stated,
“I’m still profoundly disturbed by the horrific lies reported about me.”
He stated that he wished to “move forward.”
He continued, “I’m very dismayed that so many people were so eager to condemn without knowing the facts, based entirely on the word of an angry ex attempting to circumvent due process and have me “cancelled.”
It is disgraceful that it may have succeeded, even partially.
Rick and Morty, an Emmy-winning animated sitcom about a scientist and his grandson, was co-created by Roiland, 43, and Dan Harmon in 2013. Roiland provided the voices for the show’s title characters.
Adult Swim, a division of Cartoon Network, announced in January that it had “terminated our affiliation” with Roiland and that the seventh season of Rick and Morty will continue without him. According to reports, his roles would be recast.
Roiland, who worked on the US streaming site’s animated series Solar Opposites and Koala Man, was let go by Hulu days later.
Hulu declined to comment following the dismissal of the allegations. Adult Swim has also been contacted by the BBC for comment.
Roiland’s 2016 gaming firm, Squanch Games, also announced in January that it had “accepted Justin Roiland’s resignation.”
In May 2020, California prosecutors charged Roiland with two counts of domestic abuse with corporal injury and false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit against an unnamed lady who resided with him at the time.
The alleged assault, which occurred in January of that year, resulted in “a traumatic situation” for the woman, according to a police report.
In January of this year, his attorney stated that his client was innocent and added, “We look forward to clearing Justin’s record and helping him move forward fast.”
