An English novelist best known for his naval warfare stories, such as the Horatio Hornblower series, which follows a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic wars and spans ten books. In 1938, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction was shared by the Hornblower novels A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours. The African Queen (1935; adapted into a 1951 film by John Huston) and The Good Shepherd are two of his other films (1955; turned into a 2020 film, Greyhound, adapted by and starring Tom Hanks).
