Career
In 1933, while still an undergraduate at Cambridge, he published work on what is now known as the Champernowne constant. In 1948, he collaborated with his old college friend Alan Turing to develop Turochamp, one of the first chess-playing computer programs.
His Economic Journal co-editors described him as “modest, eccentric, and amusing”.
His burial is at Dartington’s new church, which was built by his family in the 1870s to replace the old chapel at Dartington Hall, the family seat.
