Damian Lewis, who left Showtime’s business drama Billions last year, is rumored to be returning. The Emmy winner will reprise his role as Bobby “Axe” Axelrod in the show’s seventh season, which will air later this year.

Lewis will co-star with Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll, and Maggie Siff in the upcoming season, which is currently in production in New York. Before the network formally confirmed the actor’s return, photographers broke the news.

Damian Lewis will reprise his role as Billions.

No Way Home, the season 5 finale, saw Lewis’ Axelrod fleeing from law enforcement once more. Finally, he vanished in a cloak-and-dagger fashion with a fortune and fled to Switzerland to avoid prosecution in New York. The episode’s conclusion marked Lewis’ departure from the show, but it also left the door open for him to return at some point in the future. His departure in 2021 came just a few months after the death of his wife, actress Helen McCrory, that same year.

Speaking about his departure, the actor stated that his five-season run as Axe was:

“This is easily the longest I’ve spent playing a single character. It’s difficult to keep digging artistically… There is a chance that I will be able to return. However, Axe has been defeated for the time being.”

Season 6 premiered in the winter of last year and will conclude on April 10, 2022. Lewis will reprise his role as Axe in the seventh season of the sitcom. Billions are currently filming in New York, and Lewis’ return was announced last November when he was spotted filming with his co-stars outside the Tower of London.

Damian Lewis is an English actor best known for playing US Army Major Richard Winters in the HBO drama Band of Brothers, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. He won an Emmy for his portrayal of US Marine Corps Sgt. Nicholas Brody on Showtime’s Homeland (2011 to 2013).
