Henderson’s wrestling career started in high school when he participated in championship matches in 1987 and 1988. In 1993, he participated in the NCAA championships. In 1991, 1993, and 1994, he captured the university titles. Additionally, he won the senior national title in 1993, 1994, and 1997.

In 1992 and 1996, he competed for the United States in the Summer Olympics. He also participated in two World Wrestling Championships, placing 12th and 7th, respectively, in 1994 and 1997. Dan Henderson coached wrestling at Cerritos College in the 1990s. He decided to pursue an MMA career after his Olympic loss in 2000 and his World Team trial in 2001.
