Ohio resident Holly McFeeture was convicted of poisoning her fiance with antifreeze. She received a life sentence in jail in 2013 with the potential of parole after 30 years.
Over the course of days or possibly weeks, she gradually added antifreeze to Matthew Podolak’s raspberry iced tea. Prosecutors claimed that he used to regularly consume the beverage.
After one of McFeeture’s ex-boyfriends alerted police to potential participation in Podolak’s death, she wasn’t detained until 2012.
After Podolak’s death, McFeeture began dating ex-con Jamison Kennedy, who testified in court that McFeeture had admitted to poisoning Podolak.
She “put something in [his] drinks” and tried to stop, but his kidneys were already failing, he informed police in 2008.
Prior to McFeeture being charged with aggravated murder and contaminating a drug for human use, it would be another two years before County Coroner Frank Miller upgraded the case of Podolak’s death from undetermined to homicide.
According to the defense, Podolak was depressed when he poisoned himself to commit suicide.
However, the pathologist found that Podolak passed away as a result of long-term consumption of ethylene glycol.
According to Cleveland.com, Dr. Dan Galita testified that the damage to his heart suggested that he had been intoxicated for a number of weeks.
Additionally, according to his medical records, Podolak experienced excruciating back pain for three months prior to his passing, a symptom that was probably brought on by the toxin.
The prosecution argued that Podolak would take a single, massive dosage of poison as opposed to poisoning himself gradually if he truly meant to end his life.
Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is pleasant and imperceptible, making it the poisoner’s preferred weapon. It produces symptoms that are easily confused with those of other disorders.
The poison builds up in the body, harming the kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, and heart. When kidney failure is not treated properly, it results in death.
Holly McFeeture, a mother of three, shared one child, age 8, with her ex-partner and had two children total with her murdered fiancé.
Matthew Podolak Obituary – He Is Survived By His Daughters And Family
After going to the doctor for lower back discomfort and receiving treatment for kidney stones, 31-year-old Matthew P. Podolak passed away one day in 2006.
According to his obituary, he was the beloved son of Leonard Podolak and Patricia Romano (née Ciliberto) and the devoted father of Samantha and Joshua.
His stepdaughter Michaela and his fiancée Holly McFeeture are mentioned in the obituary, which was published as soon as he passed away.
It also mentions his brothers, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, and acquaintances as survivors.
Having served in the Navy, Matthew Podolak shared a two-story house with Holly McFeeture in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood.
The jury heard from witnesses who described Podolak as a jovial individual who adored his children and fiancée and drank infrequently.
According to ABC, Podolak’s family and friends advised him to change the beneficiary of his life insurance policy to his Father due to the turbulent relationship between Podolak and McFeeture.
When Podolak passed away, McFeeture received his life insurance and 401K because he declined to do so. She made no financial contributions to his funeral expenses.
After McFeeture’s arrest in 2012, Matthew’s brother Mark Podolak informed Cleveland.com that the family had long suspected her of being involved in his passing. He observed that “she simply wasn’t acting like somebody who was losing or about to lose a loved one.”
