Former American Idol contestant David Archuleta openly revealed his sexuality in a long and emotional Instagram post on June 12, 2021, announcing he was a member of the LGBTQ community.
He told his family he was gay in 2014, but later discovered he had feelings for both men and women, putting him on the bisexual spectrum. David also stated that he did not “have as much sexual [desire] as normal people” because he was saving for a wedding. He encouraged people to be more accepting of others coming out experiences and to embrace their identity as someone who struggled to accept themselves as homosexual.
“I just ask that you please consider making space to be more understanding and compassionate to individuals who are LGBTQIA+, as well as those who are members of that community and trying to find that balance with their religion,” the singer continued. He also stated that accepting his identity had given him peace of mind.

On the one-year anniversary of his lengthy speech, June 11, 2022, Archuleta reflected on his life before and after the declaration. The 31-year-old was initially terrified of his sexuality, but after coming out, he felt at ease, even if it meant dating. He also stated that he did not intend to come out during Pride Month in 2021, but that it happened on its own.
“It was simply the natural flow of events in the days leading up to coming to terms with myself and choosing to tell it out loud after breaking off an engagement I had with a wonderful and understanding lady only a few weeks earlier,” Archuleta explained, claiming that his ex-fiancee was one of three women he considered marrying. He thought having romantic relationships with women would help him forget about his inner turmoil.
But when a friend told him how much rage and loathing her husband felt because he was gay, he realized he was mistaken. The musician admitted that he had not been honest with the women he dated and had not shown them enough affection, and he apologized to all of them for making them feel inadequate.
Qualifications of David Archuleta’s Wife
Archuleta took part in a Facebook event in 2014, where he answered questions from followers before publicly revealing his homosexuality. When one of them asked what he was looking for in a spouse, Archuleta listed several characteristics.
“I’m not sure if it’s corny, but someone has to worship the Lord.” They must love the Lord more than they love me, it goes without saying. They’ll know what their priorities are then. And if they succeed, we can set similar goals for our family,” the singer said.
He was also looking for someone who could entertain and confidently carry themselves, as well as make him laugh. His future bride didn’t have to be a singer if she supported his musical career.
