In the 1994 race for governor, Beasley and his Democratic rival Lieutenant Governor Nick Theodore both encountered fierce primary opposition within their respective parties.

The controversial request he made to the South Carolina legislature to have the Confederate flag taken down from the statehouse dome earned him the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2003 from U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy.
