David Bloom was a Jew. He was, indeed. Bloom was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to second-generation Jews and social workers. The couple’s daughter Lucille was born two years earlier.
When Bloom was thirteen years old, he read a Reader’s Digest story on the University of Chicago and informed his parents he wanted to go.
His parents, on the other hand, did not share his optimism and believed that this was unachievable.
However, after moving to Chicago in 1944, his parents were close to a doctor whose son attended the University of Chicago’s gifted children’s humanities program.
After getting admitted to the same program in 1946 at the age of 15, Bloom started working on his degree and spent the next ten years studying there.
Since then, his enthusiasm for the University’s “idea” has increased.

David Bloom had three daughters, Christine, Nicole, and Ava, who were, respectively, 9, 9, and 3 years old at the time of his death.
