Before turning 14 and joining Dundee United in 2003, Goodwillie was seen playing for Carse Thistle in his hometown of Stirling at a Scottish Youth FA trial in Dundee.

Following in the footsteps of Duncan Ferguson, a former player for the boys’ team based in Stirling, Goodwillie came from Carse Thistle.

In March 2005, he signed official United documents. Goodwillie made his competitive debut for United on December 31, 2005, at Ibrox, as a late substitute in a 2-1 loss to Rangers. On March 4, 2006, Goodwillie scored a late goal at Easter Road against Hibernian on his sixth appearance for United.

In October 2006, Goodwilie signed a new deal to keep him with the team until May 2010 and debuted against Falkirk. Under new manager Craig Levein, Goodwillie made two additional appearances in the next two months as a result of other attackers’ injuries.

In November 2008, Goodwillie earned his debut for the national under-21 football team  His first senior call-up came for a friendly match against the Faroe Islands in November 2010. In the 76th minute of the match, he made his debut by taking Kris Commons’ place.
