Gower has one of the most successful first-class cricket careers in English history, both domestically and internationally. He played domestic cricket from 1975 to 1993, primarily for Leicestershire, before moving to Hampshire in 1989.

He frequently batted for both clubs. Gower led England to victory in the 1985 Ashes, but his leadership was called into question after two 5-0 whitewashes against the West Indies (in 1984 and 1985-86), and he was fired in 1986. Graham Gooch eventually took over as captain after he was momentarily reinstated for the 1989 Ashes series.

Gower retired from international cricket in 1993 as a result of their difficult friendship. Despite this, he concluded his first-class career with a stellar resume that included 53 centuries, 26,339 runs, and an average of 40.08.

He had gone 119 innings without recording a duck in Test cricket as of February 2021, setting a record. Gower was admitted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on July 16, 2009, and he went on to become a well-liked cricket analyst for Sky Sports after retiring. He was included in the nation’s top Test XI by the ECB in commemoration of England’s 1000th match in August 2018.
