Herd performed well enough in his career to capture the eye of Arsenal, who signed him for £10,000 in 1954. He made his Arsenal debut against Leicester City on February 19, 1955.
Herd played only eight games in his first two seasons at the club, and it wasn’t until 1956–1957 that he started to make an impact, scoring 18 goals in 28 appearances.
He continued to score goals after that and was the club’s leading scorer for four straight seasons, from 1956–57 to 1960–61.
Arsenal’s poor performance, however, guaranteed that they would never win a trophy; their best league placing was third in 1958–1959; instead.
