How did David Herd start his Professional Career?

Herd performed well enough in his career to capture the eye of Arsenal, who signed him for £10,000 in 1954. He made his Arsenal debut against Leicester City on February 19, 1955.

Herd played only eight games in his first two seasons at the club, and it wasn’t until 1956–1957 that he started to make an impact, scoring 18 goals in 28 appearances.

He continued to score goals after that and was the club’s leading scorer for four straight seasons, from 1956–57 to 1960–61.

Arsenal’s poor performance, however, guaranteed that they would never win a trophy; their best league placing was third in 1958–1959; instead.

Herd was Arsenal’s top scorer in 1960–61, but he left the club in July 1961 for Manchester United for £35,000 because he was unhappy with the team’s lack of success.

He made 180 appearances for Arsenal in all, scoring 107 goals overall, which places him 15th all-time. On August 19, 1961, he faced West Ham United on his United debut.

Herd contributed to the team’s FA Cup victory in 1962–1963 by scoring twice against Leicester City in the championship match.

In 1965 and 1967, he also contributed to their English league championship success. He moved from Manchester United to Stoke City on a free transfer in July 1968.
