He interned with Fred Seibert, the founder of Frederator Studios and an animation producer when he was 14 years old. His mother knew Fred’s wife and had taught Fred’s children. David began attending Japanese lessons at the Japan Society as well. Later, he met with a math tutor, and the two collaborated to develop software to assist them win at blackjack and poker.

He began his career in technology at UrbanBaby. He was summoned to do an assignment with a two-day deadline. David was quite talented, and he finished the assignment in four hours.

The creator of UrbanBaby then appointed him as the company’s head of product and gave him some stock. He spent five months in Tokyo when he was only 17 years old. He left UrbanBaby when it was sold to CNET in 2006, and utilized the proceeds from the sale of his shares to start his software consulting firm.

Davisville was the name of the company at the time. Later, Marco Arment joined the company after answering David’s Craigslist ad.

They later launched their site, Tumblr, in February 2007; within two weeks of its launch, it had over 75,000 subscribers. Davisville changed its name to Tumblr Inc. in 2007, and stock in the company was later sold to investors.

A quarter of the shares were sold. Tumblr was later bought by Yahoo! for $1.1 billion on May 20, 2013.
