Career
Norgrove began his career as an economist at the HM Treasury (1972–85), where he was seconded to the First National Bank of Chicago.
Between 1985 and 1988, Norgrove served as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s private secretary. In 1988, he joined Marks and Spencer, where he held several positions, including Director of Europe, Worldwide Franchising, Menswear, and Strategy from 1988 to 1999. In September 1999, he was appointed chairman of Marks & Spencer’s Ventures Division, and a year later, he was named executive director for Strategy, International, and Ventures.
Norgrove was heavily involved in Marks and Spencer’s early recovery, but he was fired as director of clothing in January 2004 due to poor Christmas sales. He remained chair of the trustees of the Marks & Spencer pension fund until later in the year, playing a role in Philip Green’s attempt to acquire the company.
In March 2004, he was appointed to the board of the British Museum, where he later rose to the position of deputy chairman.
He became Chairman of The British Museum Friends in November 2009, and he retired as a trustee in 2012. From 2008 to 2014, he served as a trustee for Amnesty International Charitable Trust.
