According to his relatives, he suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a crippling lung condition often associated with long-term smoking.

At the height of his addiction, Soul might smoke up to three packs a day.

Even though he was able to stop smoking around 10 years ago, the damage to his lungs remained permanent, requiring oxygen treatment in addition to a wheelchair for everyday movement.

David Richard Solberg, the father of Soul, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 28, 1943. He was raised in a musical household and is the son of a Lutheran preacher and a teacher.

Due to his mask-wearing to conceal his identity, he began his career as a folk singer in the 1960s and went by the stage moniker “The Covered Man.”

Later, he transitioned into acting, making appearances in a number of films and TV series, including “Salem’s Lot,” “Here Come the Brides,” “The Streets of San Francisco,” and “Magnum Force.”

But he became well-known and well-liked all around the globe as Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson, the blond half of Paul Michael Glaser’s crime-fighting team “Starsky & Hutch.”

The program aired from 1975 to 1979, and then in 2004 a spin-off film was produced. Soul had a prosperous musical career as well, putting out a number of albums and hits, including the number-one song in the US and the UK in 1977, “Don’t Give Up on Us.”
