David Wayne Toms was born on January 4th, 1967 in Monroe, Louisiana. The son of Thomas Edward “Buster” Toms, David Toms developed a love for golf at a young age and won the Junior World Golf Championships in 1984.

Toms played on a minor league team as well, but after graduating from Airline High School and going to Louisiana State University, he joined the golf team and started to make a name for himself there.

Toms finished T23 at the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 1991, which earned him a spot in the 1992 season. He now had access to the entire tour.
