A representative for the actor verified that Tyler Christopher, the veteran daytime television star renowned for his extensive run on “General Hospital,” has passed away at 50.
Tyler Christopher passed away on Tuesday morning, according to a statement released by his representative, Chi Muoi Lo, to CBS News.
“This news was incredibly shocking, and I am devastated by his loss,” according to Lo. “Apart from being an exceptionally talented actor, he was above all an extraordinary friend.” My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends, who cherished him so much.
Tyler Christopher, who was most notably recognized for his performance as Nikolas Cassadine on “General Hospital,” was reported to have appeared in over 1,100 episodes of the ABC soap opera between 1996 and 2016, according to CBS affiliate KFMB-TV. From 2001 to 2019, he reportedly appeared in 160 episodes of the legendary NBC serial opera “Days of Our Lives,” as reported by the station.
Tyler Christopher and his work on television have garnered critical acclaim. Nominated for four Daytime Emmys over the past two decades three for “General Hospital” and one for “Days of Our Lives”—he won the award in 2016 for Outstanding Main Actor in a Drama Series.
On Tuesday, Christopher’s erstwhile “General Hospital” co-star Maurice Benard announced his passing via Instagram. While the cause of death was not specified by Christopher’s representative, Benard stated in the post that Christopher “died this morning in his San Diego apartment after experiencing a cardiac event.”
“Tyler Christopher was a truly talented individual who lit up the screen in every scene he performed and relished bringing joy to his loyal fans through his acting,” according to Benard. “Wonderful friends and a kind personality, Tyler was cherished by all who knew him.
Tyler Christopher, an advocate for improved substance abuse treatment and mental health, candidly discussed his battles with bipolar disorder, melancholy, and alcoholism. Our deepest condolences are extended to the father and children of our dearly lost friend. May his memory live on in our hearts.”
After a brief marriage to actress Eva Longoria from 2002 to 2004, Christopher entered into matrimony with reporter Brienne Pedigo several years later. Both he and Pedigo have offspring.
The executive producer of “General Hospital,” Frank Valentini, responded to Christopher’s passing via social media.
“He was kind, an incredible actor, and a dear friend who was beloved by our #GH family and fans of Nikolas Cassadine,” Valentini reported. “On behalf of everyone at @GeneralHospital, our heartfelt sympathies go out to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
