The cause of death for Dean Ellington has not been released by his family. The technical director of ESPN passed away at home on Tuesday night. When word of his passing spread, many people—including his coworkers—were startled.
One of Dean’s many coworkers, Mike Greenberg, revealed the news of his passing on ESPN’s Get Up morning show. Greenberg talked about how important Dean was to their group and how hard they fought to make the program better.
“He died abruptly on Tuesday night,” according to Greenberg. Dean gave training to each new technical employee who joined our team. It was Dean who responded to all of the inquiries.
The sixth child of Winston and Valda Ellington was named Dean. After 41 years in Jamaica, his father Winston immigrated to the US in 1988. As a remembrance, Dadrian Ellington, one of Dean’s siblings, shared a photo of herself standing next to her brother.
One of Dean’s colleagues, Rick Kvietkus, paid tribute on Facebook. “I am shocked and saddened by the death of our colleague Dean Ellington,” Rich said. A technical expert and a nice gentleman. Dean Ellington’s Career
ESPN’s technical director, Dean Ellington, earned a mass communication degree from the University of Hartford in 1999. While still a student, Dean began working for WTIC/WTXX TV as a remote supervisor. Before coming to Fox 61 WTIC in 1999 as a production supervisor, he worked there for five years.
Ellington oversaw the Fox 61 WTIC local news station’s technical staff. Ellington’s big break came when he was hired by ESPN to serve as the technical director of the Super Bowl’s remote studio in 2008. He provided the same services for many other sporting events that year, such as the Ryder Cup and the Masters.
In 2017, Dean received a promotion to senior technical director, a position he will keep until 2022. From 2008 to 2016, he served as the NFL Draft’s technical director as well. Dean had previously worked on the morning show Get Up, and in 2022 he joined ESPN as a remote operations producer.
