Longtime New Zealand activist Titewhai Harawira passed away on January 24, 2023, at the age of 90, after enduring severe health complications.

Harawira’s son, former member of parliament Hone Harawira, stated that she would lie in state at her Avondale residence for one night before proceeding to the Hoani Waititi Marae in Henderson. She would travel to the north to be interred.

After nursing school, Titewhai Te Hoia married John Harawira in 1952 and settled in Avondale, Auckland. They had nine children, three of whom were adopted.

The couple was active in local institutions and helped establish the Hoani Waititi urban marae in West Auckland. Titewhai Harawira was also active with the Mori Women’s Welfare League, specifically in its Campaign to enhance Maori housing.

John Harawira passed away in 1977, leaving her to independently manage their large family.

She joined the protest group Ng Tamatoa in the early 1970s and fought vigorously for the Mori language, frequently in the face of severe criticism.

Titewhai Te Hoia Hinewhare was born in 1932 and reared by her family in Whakapara, Northland.
