Who Is the Wife of Len Cariou?

Since 1986, Len Cariou has been married to Heather Summerhayes Cariou. For the past 35 years, the pair have shared life and all of its facets, and they have remained inseparable parts of each other.

Len was a heartthrob back in the day, so wooing his Summerhayes couldn’t have been that tough. His wife, on the other hand, is not without grace and charm. She is a renowned actress, ballerina, and novelist.

They met through a mutual friend at the Stratford Festival. They had no intentions to date, but their first meeting piqued Len’s interest.

“Well, my sister died about six months ago, I got divorced four months ago, and I’m going on a white-water rafting trip in Oregon and I can’t swim,” Heather said when he asked her about herself.

The unexpected reaction to his question piqued Len’s interest, and he told her to call again if she was in town. They’re still together, fondly remembering their story because one thing led to another.

Their love story goes back a long way, yet Len still has his wife enthralled. He’s not a big social media user, but Heather posts on their behalf. After all these years, there isn’t a single moment captured in which Len and his wife aren’t smiling.

That is one of the numerous reasons for their lengthy marriage. The affection is obvious, but there is much more going on behind the scenes.

Heather is the author of ‘Sixtyfive Roses: A Sister’s Memoir,’ which tells the story of her sister, who had cystic fibrosis and died at a young age.

Heather took a long time to open up her heart and write about the subject. Finally, 20 years after she began writing it, she published it, and it would not have been possible without Len’s help.

Len Cariou was constantly encouraging her writing. He never rushed her to finish the book or seemed annoyed by her slowness. Heather quoted Len when she was unsure about writing the book: “‘You have everything you need to write this book, and what you don’t, I’ll help you with,’ Len replied.

So, true to his word, he purchased an IBM Selectric and some paper for me. The joke, of course, is that it took 20 years.”

She continued,

He never rushed me or demanded that I justify my creative life.
‘Have you given up?’ he never asked.
When are you going to get back to it?’

Furthermore, the assistance is reciprocal. Because of the nature of his job, Len is required to travel frequently, and Heather is always present to accompany him.

They travel between Canada, New Jersey, and Los Angeles. She knows this and is continually striving to improve the environment in which they are staying.

She says she loves to make it feel like home even when they aren’t there, so she decorates the other places with items from their New Jersey home.

Heather certainly sounds like a gem, and Len as a companion does as well. He was married to his former wife, Susan Kapilow, from 1975 to 1978, but he’s found the perfect one now, and they’ll be there for each other for the rest of their lives.
