A trip to Portugal altered everything for professional boxer Demetrius Andrade. Following his visit to the European country, the 35-year-old has made every effort to interact with Cabo Verdeans. Andrade, who was born and raised in Rhode Island, felt no influence from his forefathers.
Andrade only realized the importance of community support as he grew older. Seeing how passionate Mexicans and Dominicans are about their boxers was one of the reasons Andrade wanted to reconnect with his roots. When he fights unbeaten two-time super middleweight world champion David “El Monstruo” Benavidez on November 25, Demetrius will be hoping that his Cabo Verde neighborhood will be the loudest.

Demetrius Andrade’s ethnicity is easy to detect because the professional boxer is proud of his heritage. On his Instagram account, Demetrius can be seen carrying the Cabo Verde flag in several images. Demetrius Andrade was reared in Providence, Rhode Island, yet he strives to stay connected to his roots.
Demetrius Andrade tweeted earlier this year, on July 5, wishing Cape Verdeans a “Happy Independence Day.” In an interview, Demetrius stated that Rhode Island did not have a huge Cape Verdean community and that he grew up primarily among Dominicans. The boxer expressed a wish to reconnect with his forefathers after his time in Portugal during the chat.
Andrade stated that seeing people speak Cape Verdean Creole but being unable to connect with them sparked his curiosity about his culture. Andrade went on to claim that when he returned to the US from his vacation in Portugal, he asked his father why he hadn’t taught him Creole.
Demetrius has worked tirelessly since then to learn more about his ancestors. Last year, the former WBO light middleweight champion paid a seven-part tour to Cabo Verde. Demetrius was accompanied on the trip by his father, Paul, and the two met Cabo Verde’s Ambassador to Portugal. Paul claimed that his parents were born in Cabo Verde, even though he was born and raised in the United States. Andrade stated that his journey was primarily to benefit the Cabo Verde community.

Demetrius Andrade has previously represented the United States on a global scale. In 2020, he stated that he has dual citizenship. Demetrius informed Chachi Carvalho that he now had dual citizenship and had met with the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde. The Cabo Verde government also gave Demetrius the 1st Degree of the Sports Merit medal in 2021.
Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva presented the boxer at the occasion, which took place at the Government Palace. Demetrius emphasized his satisfaction in serving his country and expressed his wish to repay Cabo Verdeans’ devotion by visiting all of the islands throughout his speech.
And Demetrius made a try in his seven-part series. Demetrius previously competed for the United States at the World Championship, where he won gold. He also represented the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games, where he won a silver medal in the Welterweight event, losing to Pedro Lima for the gold.
Demetrius was a boxer who competed for the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. However, the fighter did not fare well, and he ended up criticizing the judges for his poor performance.
