Derrick is Socastee High School’s head coach since 2016. He was intimately attached to the institution because he attended before graduating in 1998. Derrick was a proud Socastee High alumni and football player under Dan D’Antonuy. He played in the 1998 state championship.
On June 2, 2023, he died of cancer, leaving his loved ones grieving. The coach spent his life improving Brave Nation. He helped his pupils choose subjects and supported them through tough times. His mentoring and compassion extended beyond the classroom to his pupils’ families.
Derrick Hilton Died From Cancer
After fighting illness, Socastee High School legend Derrick died on June 2, 2023. He lost his battle with stage 4 kidney cancer in October 2022. The school’s athletic director broke the heartbreaking news of his death, affecting the whole community.
Hilton’s mother, Debra Q. Brooks, cried as she imagined him playing basketball and teaching in paradise. The basketball community and his family mourned his passing, honoring his exceptional spirit.
The whole basketball community mourned Coach’s tragic death. The Boiling Springs Boys Basketball team sent condolences and prayers to his family and Socastee. Carvers Bay Boys Basketball also offered condolences, emphasizing Hilton’s community impact.
He was a dear buddy and a consistent presence at their functions. During this trying period, his family, coaching staff, players, Socastee High School, and community were prayed for. The high school and its students mourn this amazing person.
Derrick Hilton’s Health Before Death
In October 2022, Socastee High School men’s varsity basketball coach Derrick was diagnosed with cancer. His illness deteriorated despite therapy, causing his death. Hilton fought kidney cancer. The news would have halted most individuals, but Coach handled it well.
Instead of worrying about his future, he is concerned about his kids, family, friends, pupils, and players after getting the cancer news. He constantly thought and worried about others, so this altruism didn’t surprise anyone. His hips and lungs were affected by stage four cancer, according to doctors.
The community rallied behind Hilton after his diagnosis. Students, workers, and a church raised money for his medical bills. Palmetto Pointe Church of God gave $30,000 to Hilton’s cancer struggle in April. His healthcare expenditures were funded via a GoFundMe effort in October 2022.
In addition to coaching, Derrick has three children. Husband, son, brother, uncle, and good friend, he loved them all. Though his NBA goal was dashed, his role as Socastee High School men’s varsity basketball coach allowed him to inspire and mentor new athletes.
